The Southern Cross Tour
April 20th thru May 1st, 2013
Chicago, Washington DC, Savannah and Pittsburgh
You asked for one more tour, so I am very pleased to announce our upcoming fall private railcar trip!! This is our revised schedule.
This fall we will be operating a unique private railcar trip through the East. We will begin by traveling over the scenic Cardinal route through the New River Gorge and the Shenandoah Valley to DC. You will have two days to spend in DC. If you are a NARP member, the NARP Spring Meeting will be taking place this Monday-Tuesday and Wednesday. From Washington DC we will travel south on the Palmetto route. We will then arrive at the unique city of Savannah for three days to discover this charming Southern city; we will also have a day tour up to its charming sister, Charleston, SC. You may also arrange an inexpensive rental car to head out to the beaches of Hilton Head and Jekyll Island.
From there we will journey north back towards DC and layover for two nights. Due to an issue with Norfolk Southern Railroad. You will two options for our return to DC.
We have arranged an inclusive bus tour to see the famous Frank Lloyd Wright house Kentuck Knob. From there will try to also visit another Frank Lloyd Wright house in the area, Fallingwater in Bear Run, PA.. We have arranged a short evening bus tour of Pittsburgh and a dinner at the famous Church Brew Works. We will then be dropped off to wait for our train at the Pittsburgh Amtrak station and rejoin our tour.
If you do not wish to join us on the bus tour, you may stay in DC for the day and depart with us at 4PM on the private railcars for Pittsburgh and Chicago.
A detailed itinerary and outline of the trip is below.
Saturday April 20th Today we will depart Chicago behind Amtrak train #50, boarding will begin at 5:00 PM with a 5:45 departure. Passengers coming in from Nebraska and Iowa may choose to come in on Friday April 19th and stay the night in Naperville, IL. Dinner will be served on board as we navigate the complex maze of trackage out of Chicago
Sunday April 21st Breakfast will be served this morning as we navigate the former C&O railroad through Northern KY along the Ohio River. Today we will journey through West Virginia and along the New River Gorge. Later in the afternoon we will cross the Blue Ridge Mountains and pass the lovely city of Charlottesville, VA before turning north for DC. We will arrive at 6PM. Lunch and Dinner served onboard. Evening free in DC.
Monday April 22nd : and Tuesday April 23rd
We will be parked in DC today. You are free to explore the city. Continental breakfast will be available. NARP meeting is also going on today at the Hilton Alexandria, VA, easily accessible via DC Metro.
Washington DC has an endless supply of things to do. We always recommended one of the hop on/hop off bus tours. DC also has some of the best restaurants in the country. Crabcakes at Clydes in Chinatown is a must. For lunch we will also recommend Nandos, also in Chinatown. For those seeking shopping, M Street in Georgetown is a must.
Georgetown can be assessed via the DC connector bus, $1 per person each way. Chinatown is within walking distance.
Wednesday April 24th After servicing our equipment we will be added to the consist of the Southbound Palmetto for Savannah, GA. We will depart promptly at 9:55AM, please be onboard by 9:15AM. We will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner during our 600 mile trek to Savannah. Arrival is scheduled for 9:03AM. You may stay onboard the cars or reserve a hotel in town. The Savannah station is about 1.5 miles from downtown, and roughly a $4 taxi ride.
Thursday April 25thToday we will be parked in Savannah. Continental breakfast will be available until 9:30 AM. I will arrange a shuttle to downtown for the morning and evening, otherwise you may use Savannah’s convenient taxi service, roundtrip is about $7, $4 each way.
Getting to Charleston, SC: Charleston is 100 miles north on Savannah. You can leave Savannah at 8:20AM on the NB Palmetto, arriving at 10:00 AM, you then leave South at 7:10PM and arrive back in Savannah at 9:03PM The Palmetto usually is on time and tickets roundtrip should be less than $40 per person.
Friday April 26thParked in Savannah
Saturday April 27th Parked in Savannah. If you wish tot spend the night in Charleston, you may go to Charleston today. Spend the night at a local hotel and then rejoin our train tomorrow (April 28)
Sunday April 28thDepart for DC at 8:20AM behind Amtrak train 90 the Palmetto for DC, arriving in at 7:57 PM.
Monday April 29th We will spend today parked in DC.
Tuesday April 30h
Our train will depart at 4PM today for Pittsburgh and DC if you are not joining us on the bus tour.
If you are joining us on the bus tour we will leave at 9:00AM from DC union Station for the 3 hour bus ride to Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater. We will have dinner at the Church Brew works. We will rejoin our train around midnight tonight for the rest of the trip to Chicago.
Wednesday May 1st.
We will arrive in Chicago around 9:00Am today, for NARP members wanting to attend the fall meeting in Milwaukee; you can easily transfer to an Amtrak Hiawatha train for Milwaukee. Continental breakfast will be served this morning.

Prices include bus tour to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob as well as admission to both. Also includes group dinner at the Church Brew Works.

A $500 deposit is required to reserve space for the trip. We assign rooms on a first deposit first choice basis. If you are the first double room customer you can get your pick of rooms or will be assigned the nearest open room to the center of your respective car.

Roger is working on trip insurance for this trip, it is highly recommended you get this as it will protect you in case of a death in the family, emergency issue, health issue, etc.
Cancellation refund rules: 100 days prior to the start of any tour you will receive a full refund. 99 to 61 days before the departure of any tour you will receive a 50% cash/50% travel credit refund. Any cancellations received 60 or less days before the start of any tour will not receive any refund. These cancellations rules apply to everyone. We highly recommend talking to Roger or myself about Trip Insurance to cover you in case of accident, health issue, or a similar problem. The cost is very low per person.
