The Golden State Tour
October 11th thru 21st, 2011
Chicago, Los Angeles and New Orleans
We are pleased to announce our upcoming fall tour.
We will be operating a scenic vintage railcar trip to Los Angeles and New Orleans. The trip will begin in Chicago and depart behind Amtrak train #3 the Southwest Chief for Los Angeles through the mesas and desert of the American Southwest.
Upon arrival in Los Angeles our cars will be parked in LA Union Station and become your hotel accommodations during our 4-night stay here. This trip is scheduled to accommodate members of the NARP who are attending their fall meeting in LA, which takes place October 13-15.
We will then head east behind Amtrak #2 the Sunset Limited for a scenic trip crossing the California coast range, through the valley of Windmills at Palm Springs across the Salton Sea to El Paso and New Orleans.
After spending 2 nights in New Orleans we continue north on Amtrak train 58 to Chicago arriving on Friday October 21st in the morning.
A detailed itinerary and outline of the trip is below.
Tuesday October 11th Today we will depart Chicago behind Amtrak train #3, boarding will begin at 2:00 PM with a 2:45 departure. Passengers coming in from Nebraska and Iowa may choose to come in on Monday October 10th and stay the night in Naperville, IL. If so we will board there at 3:20 PM. Please be on the platform before 3:00PM! Dinner will be served this evening as we head west for Kansas City.
Wednesday October 12th Breakfast will be served this morning as we race across Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado, epicenter of the 1930’s Dust Bowl. Lunch will be served while we ascend steep Raton Pass. Dinner will be served onboard the train this evening as we approach the Arizona border.
Thursday October 13th We will be arriving early in the morning into Los Angeles Union Station at 8:15 AM PST. Breakfast will begin at 6:30AM MST ( 5:30 PST) so we can get everyone fed before LA. For those who are attending the NARP meeting, there will be an organized tour today. Stay tuned for more details. We will be parked at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal until Sunday morning.
Things to do in Los Angeles:
Los Angeles and the surrounding area has quite a lot to offer the traveler and the railfan alike.
http://www.knotts.com/ Knotts Berry Farm has a fantastic narrow gauge train operating, and is a wonderful place to spend a day.
Many passengers plan to ride Amtrak down to San Diego. You may consider hopping off at Oceanside where you can enjoy the beachfront. San Clemente is also a great place to stop and is served by LA Metrolink and Amtrak. http://www.amtrakcalifornia.com/
The station is right at San Clemente Pier, which has a locally famous seafood restaurant. http://www.thefishermansrestaurant.com/
Another fun Metrolink ride is on the Antelope Valley route up to Lancaster over Southern Pacific. http://www.metrolinktrains.com/
You may consider heading out to Disneyland for the day, the Anaheim park is a great place to spend the day for all ages. http://disneyland.disney.go.com/

Friday October 14thToday we will be parked in LAUPT. Continental breakfast will be available until 9:30 PM. NARP meeting will be going on today. Lunch and Dinner on your own. Railcars serve as your hotel room.
Saturday October 15thToday we will be parked in LAUPT. Continental breakfast will be available until 9:30 PM. NARP meeting will be going on today. Lunch and Dinner on your own.
Sunday October 16th Today we will depart behind Amtrak train #2 the Sunset Limited at 2:40 PM. Please be on board by 2:00 PM. Leaving Los Angeles we cross the Pacific Coast Range at Beaumont Hill then head east across the California desert. Dinner will be served this evening as we leave behind the sea of windmills at Palm Springs. Tonight we cross the Salton Sea, the lowest point on any American railroad.
Monday October 17th Breakfast will be served as we arrive into El Paso, TX. Coming into town we hug the Rio Grande River and Mexican border, at times the railroad line is actually next to the border. By lunchtime we will be passing through the scenic art colonies of Alpine and Marfa, TX. Dinner will be served this evening, we stop in San Antonio just after dinner time.
Tuesday October 18thBreakfast will be served this morning. We passed through Houston in the pre-dawn hours and are now near the Louisiana border. The remainder of the trip will be punctuated by the lush Cajun country and bayous of Southern Louisiana. Lunch will be served on board as we arrive into New Orleans after crossing the Huey P. Long bridge over the Mississippi River. This is the longest and highest steel railroad bridge in the United States at 4.35 miles long. You are free to spend the rest of the day in New Orleans, dinner is on your own, we will be happy to recommend some wonderful restaurants for you to enjoy.
Wednesday October 19th
Today you are free to explore the city, continental breakfast and coffee will be available onboard, lunch and dinner on your own.
Thursday October 20h
This afternoon we will depart New Orleans for Chicago behind Amtrak #58, the City of New Orleans. Departure is at 1:45PM, please be back at the train by 1:15 PM! Departing New Orleans we will follow the eastern shore of Lake Pontchartrain. A light lunch will be available upon departure, dinner will be served on board this evening. We pass through Jackson, MS and Memphis, TN today. Tonight we cross western Kentucky and the Ohio River.
Friday October 21st.
After racing up the spine of Illinois breakfast will be served at 7AM and continue on until our arrival in Chicago. We arrive into Chicago, hopefully on time, at 9:00AM. You must detrain upon arrival into the station as our equipment will be towed out to the yard.

A $500 deposit is required to reserve space for the trip. We assign rooms on a first deposit first choice basis. If you are the first double room customer you can get your pick of rooms or will be assigned the nearest open room to the center of your respective car.

Roger is working on trip insurance for this trip, it is highly recommended you get this as it will protect you in case of a death in the family, emergency issue, health issue, etc.
Cancellation refund rules: 100 days prior to the start of any tour you will receive a full refund. 99 to 61 days before the departure of any tour you will receive a 50% cash/50% travel credit refund. Any cancellations received 60 or less days before the start of any tour will not receive any refund. These cancellations rules apply to everyone. We highly recommend talking to Roger or myself about Trip Insurance to cover you in case of accident, health issue, or a similar problem. The cost is very low per person.
